Three Little Pears

Three Little Pears
6" x 18"
$650

I spoiled myself a bit for my birthday and bought myself 2 72 count sets of Derwent Coloursoft pencils and a bunch of replacement colors for ones I use all the time. I just love these pencils and I was getting worried when I saw that Dick Blick was out of many of their open stock colors. That feeling of needing to stock up over came me! I received the box of them last night and did this picture of the pears using only the new pencils - I usually mix the coloursofts with prismacolors. The experience was good but felt odd as I know the prismacolor colors so well I can pick them up without thinking.

This piece is lovely Nicole! I really like the perspective you've chosen for this, and, naturally, the lighting is wonderful. I truly wish I had the eye to come up with good still life references.

I've got to ask, how do you find the Coloursofts compared to Prisma's? I've only heard good things about them and I must admit I'm considering buying some just to see if they live up to the hype! ;)

Hi Rita! Thanks! I'm sure you could come up with good still-lifes - you have a really good eye with your equestrian pieces!

I LOVE coloursofts. They are nothing like prisas though. They are somewhere between a prismacolor and a pastel pencil. I've only used them on Pastelbord though so I can only say they are amazing on that - and you'll have to let me know how they work on other supports! ;)

Back a few years ago when I used colored pencils, I found that I liked the Derwent and another one (won't cross the yard to the studio to check it), but I found the Prismas to be too "bloomy".

I never tried them on Pastelbord, but with your (authoritative) recommendation, I think I will!

Would you call the perspective in the three pears cantilevered? I love this work, especially with the limited palette. This might be one of your defining works, IMHO.

Casey - I agree with prismas being too bloomy. I've had problems where pieces have gotten bloom after spraying and noticed when I was hanging them at a show!

I really like the new Derwents better than the old ones. They are a new line called Coloursofts which are different from their artists and studio series.

I'm so glad you like the piece! I don't know WHAT I'd call the perspective! It is a bit out of whack!
