Meet the Monadnock Artists Talk

On September 25th at 7 pm I will be giving a talk at the Thorne Art Gallery at Keene State College as a part of their "Meet the Monadnock Artists Series." The talk is inside the gallery and will consist of 45 minutes of me talking and showing my artwork and then follow up with questions.

Now I am used to doing workshops and teaching my techniques, but talking about my artwork and me is a bit different!

So I I need to ask you all what you would like to know about an artist besides technique?

Picture Frames Catastrophe

At a certain point in your career you have to ask yourself whether you want to spend your time and money creating art or framing it. I chose the former several months ago, streamlining my framing process by choosing only one frame, buying in bulk and choosing a glassless presentation.

The results were extraordinary. Not only is my post-production work literally a 5 minute procedure:

  1. Grab standard black frame
  2. Drop board in

  3. shoot tabs in.

And done -- on to the next painting (we'll just forget about papering the back and wire and fasteners for now) but streamlining the framing led to streamlining the supplies I need for creating my art as well which will cut down on costs and further add to profits.

It was a dream come true. The frames were simple, cheap, and with enough width to compensate for the lack of a matte.

& then the predictable happens. I just recently placed my 3rd bulk order that I of course needed right away to replace pieces sold. The transaction at pictureframes.com for my favorite frame went smooth & then I waited and waited for my frames to come. They didn't of course so I gave them a call to find out the frames were backordered until NOVEMBER and they hadn't bothered to let me know. I wouldn't be too upset except I need frames... and that means ordering some other frame and already by the 3rd order messing with my new streamlined operation.

Of course I know better to rely on the availability of one product and my second favorite frame will just have to do. Now they just better not stop making Pastelbord!

What a weekend that was!
I had an outdoor fair here in ton - Art in the Park - and I won 1st place in my division.

At the Colored Pencil regional show in Rhode Island on Sunday my piece won the Prismacolor award.

Just finished this one today. I set up a still-life mimicking the Dutch master Pieter Claesz and then added a contemporary twist of literally rotating the view and cropping in to a long skinny format.
This will be going to the Monadnock Fine Art Gallery later this week if you are interested in it.

Still no new artwork! Sorry, this is a big week like I said! My daughter's first day of preschool went great! Despite the fact that she was there from 8:30 am - 3 pm - she didn't want to come home! I did ok too. :-)

This is a busy weekend as well. I will be at Art in the Park this Saturday and Sunday in Keene, NH. Well, I'll be there Saturday and someone will be working my booth on Sunday. Its in Keene at the Aeshelot River Park on West Street. Its right next to the Starbucks - so if the artwork doesn't get you there that will! ;) I will be in the front section of the park in booths 55 & 56 as I will also be running the Artworks space for the art school I teach at.

Then on Sunday while that is going on I will be going to the opening of the New England regional CPSA juried show called The Art of Colored Pencil. The opening is Sunday from 1-3 at Gallery 297, 297 Hope Street in Bristol Rhode Island. I may be a bit late as I have to set up my booth at the art fair in town first. :-) I have 3 pieces inthis show, which will be up for the month of September.

Updates

Whew this is the first week of school for the kids, so it seems I am taking another week long break getting the kids ready for school. School started today for my oldest daughter and tommorrow for my youngest - her very first day of preschool! Yes I am having a bit of a breakdown! My busy schedule this week at least is helping me forget! :-)

OK now for some good news! I am currently in a juried exhibit at the sharon Art Center Gallery in Peterborough, NH and won "Juror's Choice" for my piece "Magritte's Window." That was a huge surprise!

Then I also found out that my piece "Light Vanity" was juried into the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club 111th Annual Open Exhibition at the National Arts Club, New York, NY. The show runs in October.

The pair to that piece, "Night's Agents" was juried into the International Guild of Realism’s Third Annual Juried Exhibition held at the Scottsdale Fine Art gallery in January 2008. I'm terribly excited about this one as the work of the guild members is phenominal and also my aunt lives in Scottsdale so I'm hoping she can make the show! :-)

& in September my piece Fiesta Orange will be in the United Kingdom Coloured Pencil Society's Annual Open International Exhibition 2007. Patchings Art Centre, Calverton Nottingham, UK.
Yes I am terribly excited!
