Cherry On Top

Always an admirer of Claus Oldenberg's Spoonbridge and Cherry, I thought I would do a playful cherry piece myself as part of my box series.

As I said in the last post, I actually composed this ages ago, but hadn't started on it. I took loads of photos and then changed some things up using photoshop. This is a great advantage of working with photos rather from life... sometimes you just want to get to the drawing part and not the composing.

I am posting this at such an early stage so you all know I am working!

The end result will be 12 x 16, the same as this other box piece I did, which I can't seem to find in a blog post. Weird! I must not have blogged it, so I guess I will now. I rushed to have this done for my Open Studio last month, and it hasn't left the studio yet to be shown in a gallery, I just received the frame in the mail the other day. The application is somewhat Illustrative looking, but having lived with it on the wall of the studio for a while now, the shallow depth of the box is rather convincing, which is what I love about the box pictures!

Artist Block

ARTISTS' BLOCK

We all go through it, don't we?

I seem to have a spout of it after finishing a piece that I particulrly am excited about... so ever since I finished my large portrait with the rocks and concrete (still yet to name it), I've been STUCK, which you can tell by my lack of new artwork on this blog.

The good thing is, I've finally figured out I am in this rut... so I am ready with my usual plan of attack. I'm going to switch gears again form doing the portraits and work on a still-life. Better yet, a still-life I don't have to compose, because I have a couple I composed already in waiting. I switch gears because for me, I think artists block is a lack of confidence that the next piece won't be as good. That I've used up all my art mojo and that's it - there's nothing left! I was so into this feeling the other day I had to review some of my own wip's to make sure I knew how I even DID a portrait, as for some reason I felt I had forgotten!

So, that's it... I need to do a still-life before the next portrait and get my ego back to a nice even level before attacking a portrait again. Yikes... so soon I will have something for you all to see agin!

On another topic, since the election was over I finally got to bring my Obama portrait to the Monadnock Fine Art Gallery where it is in the window on display... and already I've heard quite a lot of feedback about it!

Now HOW did I do that portrait again...sigh....

H20 Show in Newport, RI

More great news! My beach portrait won Best of Show in the CPSA district 112 memebr show. You probably remember me working n the piece. The show was a water themed show, so I decided to do a beach inspired portrait. My inyentions were to get that sun drenched, windswept feeling. The colourful skintones of the outdoors proved to be really hard to achieve. I even had to do a redo and create some color samples to get me through it! Here are my original posts on the piece while it was in progress:
