BLURB

Before I move on I need to make materials promoting my portraits to scare up some commissions. My plan was to create a tri-fold pamphlet explaining everything about the process, picture examples, and fees... but my friend Katherine suggested making a Blurb portfolio book.

Blurb is really fun to use. You just download their program and drag and drop images where they need to go. They even warn you when you drag something and want it to be beyond the image's resolution.

I should say that the first step is getting your images photographed professionally at a high resolution. It might be expensive, but if you have a good photographer, like I do, and they actually make sure the images print out the way they look in real life, they have done all the hard work for you. If you are in the Keene area - try my photographer, Mark Corliss. I have been so pleased with his work, and believe me, I tried elsewhere and not only were the images bad, they pretended that they included my Kodak Color strip and had added it later with photoshop, in the wrong scale even so it was obvious!

So back to my Blurb book. It is just a portfolio book, so no words. You can take a look through the first pages below. I decided to put it up publicly so if anyone would like to purchase a copy they can. I did not mark up the price to get a profit, I left it at the baseline price, because it is promotional material for me. The more people see it the better I figure and earning a few pennies on each book won't help as much as getting them out there. So the price is $12.95 for a 40 page softcover.

I still plan on making pamphlets too because sometimes I'll need to hand out more information, but I am trying to decide between sticking with the tri-fold idea or going with a flat 8.5 x 11 glossy sheet. Opinions on that are welcome!

Gosh things look smaller once they are on my wall at the studio! Granted we have really high ceilings in this building - maybe 12+ feet, but still! Remember what this one looked like when I was in front of it for scale?

I just got back from dropping off the artwork for the holiday show and as usual I saw some really great artwork had been dropped off from other artists - but I was shocked at how low some of the people had their artwork marked! The gallery charges a 40% commission, so with that in mind, plus expenses, the artists would be making such a small amount for their work.

I'd love to hear what you all are doing regarding prices in this... um... economic downturn?

Holiday Sale at SAC and JCC

I'll be dropping off this picture tomorrow for the Sharon Art Center Holiday Show in Peterborough, NH. They asked if everyone would bring paintings that can be priced $500 or below, so I did this smaller 8" x 10" piece called Table Reflections. I still might fiddle with it a little bit today before I frame it, and if I do, I'll repost it.
Another show which actually opens tomorrow is at the Jaffrey Civic Center in Jaffrey, NH and is their annual Autumn show. I dropped off one of my shoe paintings last week along with a portrait.

Cherry Pop!

Cherry Pop!
12" X 16"
Coloured Pencil on Pastelbord
Thanks Gayle for the name idea!
There is some distortion as usual from my wide angle lens, which is always really noticeable with the box ones.

I used my usual recipe for Pastelbord. I worked up 90% of the image using Derwent Coloursofts which cover the surface faster than other pencils and then, like icing on a cake, I finished the last 10% with Caran D'Ache Luminance pencils. Yum. That frosting is good. The Luminance pencils help me brighten the colors of the Coloursofts, blend a bit more, and basically burnish the surface.

Coming Up Cherries

Here's where I got up to yesterday. Please excuse the glare on the lower half and the distortion... oh the distortion!

This has the same green cloth as the cafe in the last thread, but I think I'll switch it to blue to match the blues in the spoon. Plus blue and red are always a favorite.

I'm off to frame some stuff and drop some things off for the Jaffrey Civic Center's Annual Autumn Area Art Exhibit, in Jaffrey, NH.
